Chandler, Wagner Star at Arizona 5A High School State Championships

By Phillip Whitten

TEMPE, Arizona, November 4. JUNIOR Ashley Chandler and senior Amy Wagner were the standouts at this weekend's Arizona 5A Girls High School State Championships, held at Arizona State University in Tempe.
Despite their heroics, perennial champion Xavier Prep won the team title with 301 points, easily outdistancing Corona del Sol (199) and Salpointe (167).
Chandler, who attends Chandler High School, won both the 200 IM (2:04.80) and the 500 free (4:50.12), just missing the state record in the 500 set last year by Kalyn Keller. Keller missed this year's state championship as she was competing at the FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships in Honolulu, where she won a silver medal in the 5K open water event.
Wagner, a senior at Mountain Pointe, took the 100 back in 55.50 (55.31p) and the 100 fly in 55.85. The state records in both events are held by 2000 Olympic champion, Misty Hyman.
Other outstanding swims were turned in by Kirsten Gilbert (senior, Xavier), who won the 100 breast in 1:03.95, and by Meghan DeVinney (junior, Westview), who took the 50 free in 23.94.
