Lewis and Clark vs. Alaska

FAIRBANKS, Alaska, October 10. THE Alaska Nanooks set a pair of pool records in a dominating 149-56 dual meet victory over Lewis & Clark College to open the season Friday at the Patty Center.

Senior Mar Brunet of Spain, in her first competition for the Nanooks, swam 59.44 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke (to lead off the 400 medley relay), a time that achieved an NCAA provisional "B" standard and eclipsed the previous pool record by almost two seconds.

In the 1000 freestyle, senior Samantha Zinsli also gained an NCAA "B" cut with a swim of 10 minutes, 44.44 seconds, which bettered the existing record by more than seven seconds. Zinsli also won the 500 freestyle to become the meet's only double winner.

"Our girls won all but one event today, which is a great way to start the season," coach Scott Lemley said in an e-mail. "The long events are (today) so we'll see if they bounce back strong enough in 14 hours to have another good day."

In addition to wins in the 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, five other Nanooks claimed races. They were freshman Courtney Nichols in the 200 freestyle; freshman Naomi Franquelin in the 50 freestyle; sophomore Kinsey Laine in the 200 individual medley; sophomore Abbey Jackson in the 100 butterfly; and sophomore Maria Pavlovskaya in the 100 breaststroke.

The two teams meet again at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Patty Center Pool.
