NCAA Div. II: Delta State Downs Rhodes

MEMPHIS, TENN., Nov. 1. It was a day of firsts for the Delta State University men's and women's swimming and diving programs yesterday on the campus
of Rhodes College in Memphis.

It was the first time in 152 years a collegiate swim meet was hosted by Rhodes and it was the first time Delta State has competed in a 25-meter meet outdoors.
It also marked the first time the Lady Statesmen and Statesmen have swept top finishes in every race in back-to-back meets, as Delta State returned home with a 145-39 victory over the Lady Lynx and a 145-36 win
over the Lynx.

The freshmen team of Shelly Baker (Rogers, Ark.), Melissa Torre (Laurel), Natalie Smith (Jackson) and Allyn Meador (Cleveland) combined for a top finish in the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 2:09.36,
while Shannon Hulton (Spring Hill, Florida) powered to her second first place finish in the 800-meter freestyle (9:42.98) for the Lady Statesmen.

Kristen Demoruelle (Biloxi) inched out Jennifer Kontur (Slidell,Louisiana) in the 200-meter individual medley, as Kontur finished .16 of a second back of Demoruelle's 2:35.61. The Statesmen also featured close intra-squad battles in the men's competition, as Billy Patterson (San Angelo, Texas) ousted Ryan Rogers'
(Lubbock, Texas) 25.15 with his first place time of 25.07 in the 50-meter freestyle. Patterson and Rogers later teamed with Brian Shaw (Jackson) and Derrick McDonnell (Cypress, Texas) in the 200-meter free
relay for a top time of 1:45.47.

Senior leader Brad Radford (The Woodlands, Texas) captured his first victory of the young season, muscling to a 1:00.54 in the 100-meter butterfly, while Chris Edmaiston (Sherman, Texas) swam to his second top time (4:16.91) in the 400-meter freestyle.
"It was a good opportunity for us to be able to go up in the middle of the week and swim competitively," head coach Ronnie Mayers said. "It was nice to be part of history."

Delta State will need to refocus quickly, as the Lady Statesmen and Statesmen prepare for arguably one of their toughest meets of the season this weekend. Delta State will travel to Monroe, Louisiana to square off
with Louisiana-Monroe and Texas Christian this Saturday at 2 PM.
