Jose Finkel Trophy: Fabiola Molina Sets South American Record in 50 Back

SAO PAULO, Brazil, September 4. DURING the second day of swimming at the Jose Finkel Trophy meet in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Fabiola Molina, 33, set a South American record in the women's 50 back. Molina clocked a time of 28.22, breaking her own standard of 28.32 set in July.

"I am motivated and I know that I swam well in Beijing," Molina told meet organizers in a rough translation. "Shortly after my participation there, I was still in Beijing for a week and attended the closing ceremonies. I will still swim for awhile, but have not decided if I will see another Olympic cycle, because I believe in having children and would be 37 in London [for the 2012 Olympics]."

Gabriel Mangabeira posted a time of 52.67 in the men's 100 fly, which broke the meet record of 53.35 set by Denis Sylantyev who swam for Mangabeira's club back in 1999. Meanwhile, Gabriella Silva claimed the women's 100 fly crown in 58.63 – just off her South American mark of 58.00.

In the men's 50 back, Guilherme Guido posted a meet record time of 25.36, breaking the previous record of 25.57 set by Daniel Orzechowski.

The 200 freestyles also took place. Tatiana Barbosa won the women's race in 2:01.62, while Nicolas Oliveira topped the men's race in 1:49.60.

Thiago Pereira (4:30.54) and Joanna Maranhao (4:58.92) also clocked top times in their respective 400 IMs.

Complete results packages have not been posted by meet organizers.
