USA Swimming Sectionals, Austin: Best in Texas on Display

AUSTIN, Texas, July 19. THE best in Texas was on display during the last session of action at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Austin.

Longhorn went 1-2 to open the final night of swimming at the meet. Kirsty Coventry blitzed the field with a 2:15.40 in the women's 200 IM, while teammate Alison Soelter placed second in 2:19.25. Kristen Heiss of the Aggies finished third in 2:22.50 after coming off an emotional run at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

The Longhorn men matched the ladies' effort in the men's 200 IM. Brian Wilson (2:04.71) and Bryan Collins (2:07.17) swept the top-two spots with Fleet's Neil Caskey placing third in 2:08.12.

Fleet responded with a podium sweep in the women's 200 fly. Cammile Adams, 16, won in 2:15.48, while Ellen Lobb, 16, finished second in 2:18.77. Traci Van Matre completed the sweep with a time of 2:20.09.

Natalie Sacco of Longhorn snatched the women's 1500 free in 16:39.61, while Liz Nelson, 17, of The Woodlands (17:05.72) and Mikayla Felchak, 15, of Fleet (17:22.38) made up the rest of the top three.

Longhorn claimed a 1-2-3 of its own in the men's 200 fly. Michael Klueh raced to the win in 1:59.72, while Matt Donch (2:00.79) and Hill Taylor (2:05.30) finished second and third.

Triin Aljand of the Aggies claimed the women's 50 free in 25.86, while Kannon Betzen of the Mustangs (27.09) and Genny Konicke of Plano (27.19) touched in second and third behind her.

Miko Malberg of Tiger snagged the men's 50 free title in 22.67. Camilo Becerra of Fort Worth placed second in 22.92, while Longhorn teammates Jonathan Jackson and Donch tied for third with matching 23.24s.

Connor Nolan, 15, walked away with the men's 1500 free crown in 16:15.76, while Nolan Slesnick of Texas Gold took second in 16:21.46. Scott Drews of Longhorn finished third in 16:25.78.

The 400 medley relays rounded out the meet. Texas Gold's Cassie Cunningham, Micah Lawrence, Lacey Bobo and Sherrill Thompson won the women's title in 4:21.77, while Mustangs Jonathon Berrettini, Mitchell Johnson, Nate Clark and John Huddleston pocketed the men's in 3:54.00.
