British National Championships: Rebecca Adlington Lowers Own Commonwealth Record in 400 Free

LIVERPOOL, England, July 13. REBECCA Adlington enjoyed a stellar swim to close down the British National Championships held in Liverpool. Adlington clocked a time of 4:02.80 to down her previous women's 400 free Commonwealth record of 4:04.50 set in April.

That time moved her into third in the world this year behind only Federica Pellegrini (4:01.53) and Katie Hoff (4:02.20). Joanne Jackson (4:05.49) and Camelia Potec (4:08.72) finished second and third, respectively, in the event tonight.

Daniel Fogg took the men's 1500 free crown with a time of 15:31.61. Richard Charlesworth placed second in 15:43.62, while Daniel Mills took third in 16:01.46.

Fran Halsall then won the much shorter women's 50 free with a time of 25.24. She touched out Sweden's Anna-Karin Kammerling, who took second in 25.45 ahead of Alena Popchanka (25.87).

Gregor Tait picked up the men's 200 back title in 1:59.30, while Marco Loughran (2:00.24) and Scott Hathaway (2:02.28) rounded out the top three.

Simon Burnett surfaced triumphant in the men's 100 free with a touch-out 49.34 to 49.54 win over France's Fabien Gilot. Adam Brown took third in 49.68.

Georgia Davies followed with a time of 1:02.26 to claim the women's 100 back title. Katy Sexton placed second in 1:02.66, while Melanie Nocher finished third in 1:03.73.

The men's 100 breast crown went to Christopher Cook with a 1:02.47, while Barry Murphy (1:02.90) and Kristopher Gilchrist (1:02.96) joined him in the 1:02 range.

Jemma Lowe topped the women's 200 fly with a time of 2:07.57, while Jessica Dickons (2:08.74) and Stephanie Johnson (2:13.76) touched second and third, respectively.

Octavio Alesi grabbed the men's 50 fly title in 24.46, while Matthew Clay finished second in 24.63 and Loughran snatched third in 25.04.

Hanna Westrin followed in the women's 50 breast with a winning readout of 32.60. Stephanie Slater (32.75) and Sophie De Ronchi (33.22) completed the rest of the podium.

In the final event of the meet, Joseph Roebuck captured the men's 400 IM title with a time of 4:22.21. Lewis Smith took second in 4:24.41, while Robert Pavoni placed third in 4:27.70.
