Janet Evans Invitational: Julia Smit Triples; Ous Mellouli On Tear

LOS ANGELES, California, June 7. JULIA Smit won three of the four individual titles on offer for the women during the second night of swimming at the Janet Evans Invitational.

Smit opened with a touch-out triumph over Natalie Coughlin, 1:57.34 to 1:57.37, in the women's 200 free. Coughlin led throughout most of the race with a 1:27.53 to 1:28.13 at the 150, but Smit blazed a 29.21 during the final 50 meters. Both swimmers surpassed the meet record of Claudia Poll's 1:58.02 set back in 2000.

Smit then posted a much more convincing victory in the 400 IM with a meet-record time of 4:38.58. She beat the former record of 4:41.71 set by Joanne Malar in 2000 and Tanya Hunks, who finished second in 4:44.33.

Smit completed the title trifecta with a 2:14.34 in the women's 200 back. She knocked off Madison White, who finished second in 2:15.31.

Elaine Breeden earned the only other women's individual title of the night with a time of 58.80 in the 100 fly, just off Dana Vollmer's meet record of 58.40.

For the men, Ous Mellouli is on a tear after coming off his substance ban of 18 months. He's attempting to qualify for as many events at the Olympics as possible for Tunisia. Tonight, he blazed the 400 free with a time of 3:44.79 as he held off a late push by Larsen Jensen, who finished second in 3:44.86. Jensen ripped off a 27.46 in the final 50 attempting to reel in Mellouli. The pair crushed Ian Thorpe's meet record of 3:46.60 set in 2004.

In the 200 free, Dominik Meichtry won the race in 1:48.31, ahead of Daniel Beal's second-place time of 1:49.19.

Vanni Mangoni then beat Trojan teammate Tamas Kerekjarto, 4:19.28 to 4:20.54, in the men's 400 IM.

Jason Dunford tied the meet record of Michael Phelps with a time of 53.44 in the men's 100 fly. Phelps originally set the standard in 2002.

Peter Marshall, meanwhile, won the 200 back in 2:02.29, touching out Louis Vayo, who finished second in 2:02.50.
