Open Water Festival: Top Stars Shine

FORT MYERS BEACH, Florida, June 3. THE 2008 Open Water Festival took place at Fort Myers Beach, Fla., with several open water stars showing their wares.

On Friday, Fran Crippen walked away with the men's 5K title while representing Mission Viejo. He stopped the clock in 55:54.50, while Cody Kauffman took second in 56:20.20. Nicholas Caldwell, 15, of the Gulf Coast Swim Team placed third in 57:00.80.

Meanwhile, Eva Fabian, 14, of Greenwood Memorial Swim Club claimed the women's 5K in 1:02:06.20. Colleen Gordon then led four swimmers from the Colorado Springs Swim Team finishing second through fifth with a 1:03:46.10. Whitney Sprague (1:04:19.80), Nicole Vernon (1:04:20.40) and Kassia Shishkoff (1:04:20.50) were the rest of Gordon's teammates to finish one after the other.

Could Fabian be the next youngster to blast onto the open water scene like Chloe Sutton did two years ago?

In the 10K open, Harry Stephenson, 15, of the Gulf Coast Swim team won the men's race in 2:00.44, while Cameron Rattray, 15, of Berkeley Aquatics took second in 2:01.24. Graham Charlton, 16, of Schroeder placed third in 2:07.32.

Ashley Whitney won for the women in 2:16.35 representing Excel Aquatics, while Sterling Wine, 17, touched second in 2:18.18 for Highland Aquatics. Shauna Nelson rounded out the top three in 2:27.05.

In the men's 25K, Michael Daup of Minnesota Aquatics grabbed the title in 5:46.57, while Krista Mantay of City of Pembroke Pines captured the women's crown in 6:13.29.

In the Florida Swimming senior championships, Sarah Howard won the 2.5K in 29:46, while Matt Kaminskey grabbed the boys' 2.5K title in 26:58.
