Masters Swimmers Prove Age is Just a Number at Mission Viejo Meet

MISSION VIEJO, California, June 3. AT the Mission Viejo Nadadores meet held this weekend, Rita Simonton, 90, and Walter Pfeiffer, 95, put on a show in their age divisions.

Pfeiffer posted world records for the 95-99 age division in the 50 fly (2:01.41), 100 fly (4:09.52), 200 fly (14:05.25), 200 IM (8:55.98) and 400 IM (17:29.20).

Eugene Lehman of Canada held the previous 50 fly record with a 2:40.49 in February of this year. All the other events had never been recorded by a man of his age by FINA, and therefore are world records.

Simonton also set five world records in the 90-94 age division. She set the 200 free (4:41.87), 400 free (9:31.12), 800 free (19:13.55) and 1500 free (36:02.20) all in the same race. She also broke the 50 fly in 1:33.12.

Audrey Etienne owned the previous record in the 200 free (5:06.38), while Willy Van Rysel set the 400 free with a time of 10:58.64 in 2006. Van Rysel also set the 800 free (22:42.50) and 1500 free (42:30.27) during the same swim. Anne Bauscher was the previous owner of the 50 fly record with a 4:57.25 from back in 1994.
