Maria Lenk Brazil Trials: Cesar Cielo Clocks Strong Time

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 7. THE Maria Lenk Brazilian Trials opened in grand fashion today as several meet records took a tumble.

Cesar Cielo posted a pair of sub-22 times, with his preliminary effort of 21.90 setting the men's 50 free meet record. He later won the title in 21.96. His 21.90 is tied for the fifth-fastest in the world this year. Countryman Jader da Silva Souza finished second in 22.68, but missed the Olympic cut.

Poliana Okimoto set another meet record, this time with an 8:45.07 in the women's 800 free. Her performance, however, missed the Olympic A cut, but made the B standard.

Juan Pereyra took down the other meet record with a time of 15:28.88 in the men's 1500 free. He cleared the Olympic B cut, but finished short of the A time.

In other events, Flavia Delaroli-Cazziolato clocked a time of 25.47 in the women's 50 free – just short of the Olympic A cut of 25.43, but within the B time standard. Tatiana Barbosa placed second in 25.95.

Tatiane Mayumi Sakemi snatched the women's 200 breast title in 2:36.72, but fell short of both Olympic cuts, while Thiago Pereira punched his ticket to Beijing with a winning time of 2:14.16. He touched out Tales Rocha Cerdeira (2:14.21) for the lone Beijing spot for Brazil.
