Pennsylvania Class AA Men’s High School State Championships

By Brian Savard

LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania, March 29. TREVOR Scheid of Shady Side Academy has had quite a storied career at the Pennsylvania AA State Championships.

He earned three medals his freshman year, three his sophomore year, four his junior year and three his senior year, hauling in enough metal to start a foundry.

But no accomplishment stands out more than his dominance at the Pennsylvania Men's Class AA Championships this year.

Scheid, who is bound for Stanford University next season, pumped out two state-record swims in each of his events and solidified his status as one of the top middle distance recruits in the country.

Scheid recorded a 1:38.35 200 freestyle, splitting respective 50s in 23.06, 24.85, 25.27 and 25.17. The swim erased the former Class AA mark of 1:39.02, which he set at last year's meet. The following day, Scheid turned in a remarkable 4:24.42 time in the 500, creaming the former class record of 4:29.57, which Matt Harrigan of Hampton set in 1997.

Scheid said that his swim exceeded his goal for the evening.

"After my swim this morning, I knew I could go in the mid 4:20s," Scheid said. "I'm pretty excited about my time, I felt great all the way through."

Danville's Nick Hein also corralled two event wins. Hein posted the top 50 freestyle time in 20.95 and the top 100 freestyle time in 46.07.

All three relays were swum in state-record time.

York Suburban assaulted the record book twice. The 200 medley relay foursome of Kevin Marsteller, Chris Manning, Harry Foster and Ben Appleby slaughtered the field with a 1:34.63 swim. The time bettered Springfield Township's 2007 record of 1:36.77. Foster, Appleby, Manning and Marsteller joined up again in the final event of the four-day championship weekend with a 3:08.27 time, breaking an 11-year-old record (3:10.29) that Hampton set in 1997.

Springfield Township's 200 freestyle relay containing Ben Clark, Jake Oeschger, Hugh Pedley and Ben Fallon inched under the 200 freestyle relay record with a 1:25.81 win. Shady Side Academy set the former record of 1:25.91 in 2002.

York Suburban used a strong showing on the final day of the meet, despite having only five men qualify for the two-day championship meet, with a 212-point finish, which was good enough to defend its team title. Hershey placed second with 180 points while Scheid's Shady Side Academy team finished up in third (133).
