Latin Cup: Italy Dominates Meet

SERRAVILLE, San Marino, April 28. ITALY completed the Latin Cup held in Serraville, San Marino with 35 total medals including 23 of the gold variety to dominate the meet this weekend. Spain took second with 27 medals, while Brazil finished third with 20 medals.

Elisa Celli of Italy completed the lone sweep of the women's events with a breaststroke brace. She won the 50 (33.23), 100 (1:11.24) and 200 (2:32.35), while also chipping in as part of Italy's 400 medley relay victory in 4:13.59 along with Sara Fazzini, Ilaria Bianchi and Livia Travaglini.

Travaglini also earned four titles as she claimed wins in the 50 (26.84) and 100 (57.53) freestyle events. On top of helping Italy's 400 medley relay to a win, she also was a part of the 400 free relay triumph in 3:50.82 along with Anna Greselin, Martina De Memme and Jasmin Agnoletto as the second leg.

Bianchi wound up with three titles as she added the 50 fly (27.63) and 100 fly (1:00.01) to her win in the relay.

Other multiple wins came from Eider Santamaria of Spain in the 400 (4:16.29) and 800 (8:47.23) free, while Francesca Aceto of Italy claimed both the IM titles with wins in the 200 (2:18.02) and 400 (4:51.05).

Cecilia Elizabeth Biagioli of Argentina won the other freestyle event with a 2:03.83 in the 200, while Jessica Andreini of Italy took the 200 fly in 2:14.40.

The backstroke featured three separate winners as Brazil's Etienne Medeiros took the 50 (30.01), Spain's Lydia Morant won the 100 (1:03.41) and Spain's Natalia Torne snared the 200 (2:16.46).

For the men, Brazil's Leonardo Guedes topped the 100 (56.29) and 200 (2:02.26) backstroke events, while Italy's Edoardo Giorgetti took the 50 (28.58) and 100 (1:02.21) breaststroke titles. Giorgetti also helped Italy's 400 medley relay to a win along with Matteo Milli, Marco Pellizzon and Michele Santucci in 3:42.80. Pellizzon also won the 100 fly in 54.61.

Santucci, on top of winning the 100 free in 50.04, was a member of all three winning Italian relays. Along with the 400 medley relay, the team of Santuci, Gianluca Maglia, Luigi Caleca and Cesare Sciocchetti won the 400 (3:32.41) and 800 (7:26.37) free relays.

No single male swimmer dominated any other multiple events.

In the freestyle, Brazil's Bruno Frattus (50 – 22.95), Spain's Jose Alonso (200 – 1:50.50), Venezuela's Daniele Tirabassi (400 – 3:52.69) and Brazil's Lucas Kanieski (1500 – 15:28.61) surfaced with wins.

Spain's Eloi Sanchez won the 50 back in 26.66, while Italy's Luca Pizzini took the 200 breast in 2:14.60. Spain's Pablo Mira 50 (24.74) and Argentina's Andres Jose Gonzalez 200 (2:00.82) each won a butterfly crown.

Italy's Daniele Cova (2:04.52) and Luca Angelo Dioli (4:23.63) each won their respective 200 and 400 IM titles.
