MANCHESTER, England, April 10. PETER Mankoc, representing Slovenia, claimed the world title in the men's 100 fly at the FINA World Short Course Championships.

Mankoc punched the pad in 50.04 to clear his national record of 50.60 set last December, while also beating Adam Pine's meet record of 50.09 set during qualifying yesterday. The win adds to Mankoc's previous world titles in 2002 and 2004 in the 100 IM.

"Yesterday in the morning was a disaster, so I wasn't expecting to improve that much," Mankoc told meet organizers. "In my mind I didn't go for a medal, but after the first 50m I saw I was in first (place) so I thought: ‘go for it'. I am ecstatic. I came here to get this result. I said my goal is the record. I didn't get ready for the European Championships; I just got ready specially for this championship."

Pine, meanwhile, settled for silver with a time of 50.54, while Russia's Nikolay Skvortsov earned bronze in 50.78.

The New Zealand duo of Moss Burmester and Corney Swanepoel continued to swap the national record, with Burmester tying Swanepoel's preliminary time of 50.94 for fifth. Swanepoel wound up sixth in 51.20.
