MANCHESTER, England, April 9. AUSTRALIA's Kenrick Monk claimed the first world title on offer at the FINA World Short Course Championships held in Manchester.

Monk walked away with the title in the men's 200 free when he clocked a 1:43.46 from lane seven to touch out teammate Kirk Palmer, who was second in 1:43.50 from lane eight. Top-seeded Massi Rosolino from Italy rounded out the podium with a third-place 1:44.23.

"I wasn't concentrating on anything else apart from my own the race," Monk told meet organizers. "I was a bit flat this morning but I rested well and that has obviously paid off. I thought the guys inside me would be more of a challenge but I didn't once look over, I just decided to swim my own race and went for it. I was way off my personal best today (morning) so I knew I had something left in the tank for tonight."

Ian Thorpe's world record will survive another day after he set it with a 1:41.10 in 2000.

Monk is the first Australian to win the title since Thorpe's victory in 1999 when the Thorpedo went 1:43.28 to set a then-world record.

Russia's Alexander Sukhorukov set a national record with a fourth-place 1:44.28 to surpass the 1:45.18 set by Yuriy Prilukov in 2003.
