Michigan Men’s Division 1 High School State Championships

ROCHESTER, Michigan, April 8. TWO Ann Arbor School District schools took first and second at the men's Division 1 Michigan High School State Championships.

Ann Arbor Huron held a 19-point advantage over Ann Arbor Pioneer, taking first by a score of 279-260. Grand Haven trailed well behind the two Ann Arbor schools, placing third with 188 points.

Grand Haven's foursome of Erik Johnson, Jason Lintjer, Aaron Beebe and Jake Heyblom set a Division 1 record in the opening event, taking down a 4-year-old 200 medley relay record with a 1:34.40 time. Holland set the former mark of 1:34.93 in the preliminary heats at the 2004 championships.

Dan Thurston of Ann Arbor Huron notched two wins for the champion River Rats, taking the 200 freestyle in 1:41.89 and the 500 freestyle in 4:37.18.

Michael Zennedjian from Birmingham Brother Rice fell .01 short of the Division 1 record in the 200 IM, touching the wall in a first-place 1:51.20. Zennedjian also captured the state title in the 100 breaststroke (57.86).

Sam Hoekstra from Grandville rounded out the double event winners with two sprint freestyle victories. He posted the top time in the 50 freestyle (21.27) and the 100 freestyle (46.07).

Joe Smith from Byron Center nabbed top honors in the diving competition, scoring a 403.00. Kevin Douglas of East Kentwood placed second with a score of 355.80 while Saline's Joel Chambers brought home the bronze with a score of 351.00.
