Canadian Trials: Three National Records Set on Final Night

MONTREAL, Canada, April 6. THE final night of swimming at the Canadian Trials features some fast action as three national records tumbled.

Ryan Cochrane chopped a massive amount of time off his national record in the men's 1500 free with a splendid time of 14:54.66 in the distance event. That readout eclipsed Cochrane's record of 14:59.02 set last summer. Cochrane also moved into eighth all time behind Erik Vendt (14:47.59) and ahead of Tae Hwan Park (14:55.03).

Victoria Poon clipped her Canadian record in the women's 50 free with a time of 25.47. The performance slipped under Poon's national record of 25.52 set back in 2005.

In a men's 400 medley relay time trial, the team of Jake Tapp, Mathieu Bois, Joe Bartoch and Joel Greenshields destroyed the national record with a time of 3:34.99. The previous record of 3:37.94 had stood since the 2003 World Championships as set by Tobias Oriwol, Morgan Knabe, Mike Mintenko and Rick Say.

Richard Hortness snatched the men's 50 free title with a time of 22.48, while Matt Rose finished second in 22.53. In another close call, Brian Johns touched out Keith Beavers in the men's 200 IM, 2:01.31 to 2:01.51. Lindsay Seemann also pocketed a victory in the women's 200 back with a time of 2:12.06.

In Paralympic events, Benoit Huot won the men's 50 free in 25.32, while Valerie Grand-Maison took the women's 50 free title in 27.91.
