Spanish Championships: Meet Closes With Pair of National Records

MAJORCA, Spain, April 6. THE final day of the Spanish Championships in Majorca finished in fine fashion with a pair of national records falling.

Mireia Belmonte Garcia destroyed the Spanish record in the women's 200 breast when she hit the wall in 2:27.00. Sara Perez owned the previous standard with a time of 2:28.87 set back in 2005. The time also cleared the meet record of 2:27.45 set by European-record holder Agnes Kovacs with a 2:27.45. Kovacs' continental standard of 2:24.03 is still well ahead of Garcia's time from today.

Marco Rivera Miranda followed with a Spanish record in the men's 400 free when he clocked a time of 3:49.82. That performance obliterated the 3:51.20 set by Javier Nunez Molano in 2006. The meet record of 3:51.63 held by Miranda also fell.

The only other record came as Melquiades Alvarez Caraballo broke a 16-year-old meet record with a time of 2:13.28 in the 200 breast. Joaquin Fernandez Corredor's time of 2:13.52 had stood the test of time in the event since 1992.

Two close calls also occurred during the final day. Eloy Sanchez Torres beat Miguel Rando Galvez by the slimmest of margins in the men's 50 back, 26.52 to 26.53, while Araceli Herraez De La Calle downed Jesus Palacios Armas, 27.78 to 27.87, in the women's 50 fly.

Nadav Kochavi rounded out wins for the men with a 50 fly time of 24.59.

Meanwhile, Escarlata Bernard Gonzalez (200 IM – 2:16.99), Erika Villaecija Garcia (800 free – 8:41.18) and Mercedes Peris Minguet (50 back – 28.84) won for the women.
