Maryland Women’s 1-3A High School State Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, April 1. MIDDLETOWN, powered by a 230.5-point showing, successfully captured the team title at the second annual Maryland Women's 1-3A Championships.

Frederick placed second, amassing 181 points while Queen Anne's tailed closely behind, finishing third with 178 points.

Middletown's Katelyn Rossick scored the maximum of 40 individual points throughout the course of the meet, winning two individual events and setting one state record. Rossick improved upon her 2007 record in the 200 IM, clocking a 2:09.88 time. Her swim erased the former mark of 2:11.00 that she set last year. Rossick also hit the touchpad first in the 100 freestyle, stopping the clock at 54.19.

Ally Long of Frederick chalked up two individual event triumphs as well, and she also claimed a state record. Her 100 backstroke performance of 1:00.53 bettered the former state standard of 1:01.36, which she set last year. Long also finished the 500 freestyle first, clocking a 5:11.67.

Samantha Durham from Walkersville set a state mark in the 50 freestyle with her 25.25 performance. Her time improved Taylor McWilliams of Cambridge/SD's 2007 mark of 25.44. Durham also finished third in the 100 butterfly (1:04.12).

Queen Anne's accounted for two of the three relay wins. The Queen Anne 200 medley relay team of Alison Robertson, Kaitlin Rash, Devin Lessard and Madison Beres touched first, claiming the 1-3A title in 1:58.06. The Queen Anne's foursome of Lessard, Beres, Rash and Robertson returned, taking the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:46.77 time.
