Chinese Trials: Second Day of Finals Complete

SHAOXING, China, April 2. AFTER the first day of swimming at the Chinese Trials featured a pair of national records, morning finals of the second day witnessed a slowdown at the meet.

Wu Peng came up short of a predicted Asian record in the men's 200 fly when he clocked a time of 1:55.19 to win the event. He had already set the Chinese national record with a 1:54.82 in earlier action. Takashi Yamamoto's Asian record of 1:54.56 set at the 2004 Athens Games will live another day. Chen Yin finished second in 1:55.62, while Shi Feng took third in 1:58.72.

"I aimed at breaking the Asian record last night, so I took all my effort in the heat," Wu told Chinaview. "Therefore, I felt a little bit strengthless in the end of the final. I think I have had the capability of rewriting the Asian record, and I will try hard to swim closer to Michael Phelps at the Olympics."

In the women's 200 fly, Liu Zige snatched the title in 2:07.76 over Jiao Liuyang. Jiao wound up with a second-place time of 2:08.84 in the event.

Xie Zhi earned the men's 100 breast crown with a time of 1:01.90, short of his national record from prelims, while Cai Li pocketed the men's 50 free title in 22.70. Tan Miao also emerged with a win when she went 4:09.69 in the women's 400 free.
