NCAA Division I Women’s Champs: Florida’s Caroline Burckle Surfaces From Epic 200 Free to Win Second Title of Meet

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 21. FLORIDA's Caroline Burckle added the 200 free crown to her NCAA-record 500 free victory during an epic battle at the NCAA Division I Women's Championships.

With defending champ Lacey Nymeyer of Arizona and Texas A&M's Julia Wilkinson closing quickly in the event, Burckle surfaced from an incredibly close heat that featured three of the top 15 performances of all time.

Burckle clocked the fifth-fastest-tying time ever with a 1:43.10 to move into a tie with Katie Hoff as the fourth-fastest swimmer in the event ever. Only Natalie Coughlin (1:41.66), Christine Magnuson (1:43.00) and Martina Moravcova (1:43.08) stand in front of her.

Burckle's win also increased Florida's lead in the event with seven titles to the program's credit – the most in NCAA history. Nicole Haislett won four straight from 1991-94, while Tami Bruce won in 1988 and Whitney Hedgepeth took the 1990 crown.

Incidentally, Tennessee did not enter Magnuson in the 200 free, which paid off when she won the 100 fly an event earlier.

Meanwhile, Nymeyer moved into seventh all time when she hit the wall in 1:43.33 for second. That performance stands as the ninth-fastest time ever.

Wilkinson clocked the 15th-best time in the event with a third-place 1:43.64, which moved her to 12th all time in the event.

With that event in the bag, Arizona owned 245 points for first with Auburn second with 192 points. Texas A&M (181), Stanford (162) and California (156) rounded out the top five.
