Master’s Records Tumble at SOCAL Regional Meet

IRVINE, CA – Two San Diego swimmers set Masters age group World and National records this past weekend during the Southern Pacific Long Course Meters Regional
Championships held at the UC Irvine pool, August 12-13. 85 year-old Jim Eubank demolished five FINA World Records in the freestyle events establishing world bests in the 100 (1:26.51), 200 (3:22.42), 400 (7:24.22), 800 (15:39.82) and 1500 meter free (29:53.88).

Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen, 38, established a new 35-39 age group record in the 1500-meter free with a PR of 17:46.58. Her time shattered the previous world best of 17:55.31 done by Australia’s Penny Bond in 1998.

Other records to fall: Walt Pfeiffer, 86, set 2 new world records: 50M fly (54.98) and 200M IM (4:33.24), and Nick Shackell of Great Briatain's Olympic Team, in his first Masters meet, broke Jim Montgomery's 19-year-old 100M free record with a 50.74.

San Diego Swim Masters placed first overall in the championship meet, coming from behind on the final day to surpass Ojai-Santa Barbara Masters by a mere 36 points.
