NJCAA Championships: IRCC Men Down NJCAA Records

FORT PIERCE, Florida, March 5. THE National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) Championships got underway on the campus of Indian River Community College in Florida.

A pair of men's NJCAA marks fell during the initial night of swimming as the IRCC men look to win its 34th straight NJCAA title, the longest streak in U.S. collegiate competition.

The team of Zack Stockman, Emmett Walling, Gordon Touw Ngie Tjouw and Gideon Louw clocked a time of 3:14.60 in the men's 400 medley relay to crush the previous record set by IRCC in 2006 with a 3:20.08.

Meanwhile, the IRCC men also erased the men's 800 freestyle relay as the team of Roberto Gomez, Daniel Munoz, Raul Martinez and Louw touched in 6:34.24. That time wiped out the 6:36.50 set by IRCC last year.

In women's action, IRCC started its journey towards its 27th successive title with a pair of victories. Katie McRoberts, Kalia Martin, Yesica Rojas and Shanda Casella hit the wall in 3:53.82 to win the women's 400 medley relay.

Then, the IRCC team of Mary O'Sullivan, McRoberts, Martin and Cara Potter stopped the clock in 7:39.02 to capture the 800 freestyle relay crown.

Over on the boards, Kayla Purkiser of IRCC led preliminary action in the women's one-meter with a tally of 493.05, while Michael Wright posted a total of 596.10 points to lead three-meter qualifying.
