West Virginia High School State Championships

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia, February 23. WINFIELD and Bridgeport walked away with state titles at the West Virginia High School State Championships. Winfield won for the girls with 127 points followed by George Washington (120) and Parkersburg (106). On the boys' side, Bridgeport tallied 209 points while George Washington took second (191.50) and Charleston Catholic placed third (126).

Girls Results
Cortney Cottrell, Madi Holbert, Allison Hines, and Abby Hendershot (Big R) won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:57.95.

Hurricane's Kaley Gregory was a dual event winner in the 200 (1:57.23) and 100 (54.77) freestyles.

Kelsey Ferguson (Weir) had individual wins in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke. She clocked times of 2:12.63 and 1:09.74, respectively.

Bridgeport won the 200 freestyle relay (1:46.64). Mollie McKinley, Michele Csonka, Cady Messenger, and Laura Alvarez contributed to the win.

Other first-place finishers include Delaney Johnson (Elkins) in the 50 freestyle (25.29), Lexie Gutierrez (Winfield) in the 100 butterfly (59.09), Megan Clemens (Nitro) in the 500 freestyle (5:15.23), and Courtney Miller (Buckhannon-Upshur) in the 100 backstroke (58.91).

Savannah Slaughter, Heather Gacek, Anna Davis, and Allison Pitchford (George Washington) finished first in the 400 freestyle relay (3:53.55).

Boys Results
Matthew Csonka, Max Garner, Jacob Merinar, and Zach Higginbotham (Bridgeport) won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:42.30.

Charleston Catholic's Joseph AbuRahma was a dual event winner in the 200 freestyle (1:45.29) and the 100 butterfly (51.27).

Tim Squires (Buckhannon-Upshur) had individual wins in the sprint races. He clocked state records in the 50 (20.53) and 100 (45.31) freestyles. He teamed up with Tyler Tenney, Nick Williams and Adam Brumley for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:33.20).

Other first place finishers include Thomas Moore (George Washington) in the 200 IM (1:56.80), Evan Walker (George Washington) in the 500 freestyle (4:52.32), Tate Warden (Capital) in the 100 backstroke (54.62), and Peter Murto (Morgantown) in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.20).

Moore, Michael Lynch, Ross Davis, and Walker closed the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:19.18).
