Arizona State v. San Jose State

SAN JOSE, California, March 2. ADDISON McGrath tallied four goals to become the program's all-time goal scorer and Caylinn Wallace stopped nine shots as the No. 10 Arizona State University water polo team picked up its first conference victory of the season with a 7-5 defeat of No. 8 San Jose State Saturday afternoon in San Jose, Calif. The Sun Devil improved to 11-7 overall and 1-2 in the MPSF while the host Spartans fell to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in the league.

The game opened with neither team finding the back of the cage in the first quarter of play before eight goals were scored in the second stanza, including five by the Sun Devils to SJSU's three. The Sun Devils increased their lead to 7-4 through three quarters before being blanked in the fourth and allowing one goal for the 7-5 final.

McGrath, who scored all four of her goals in the second quarter, brought her career total to 137 and moved past Katie Hedley, who was the record holder with 134 goals scored. Kelly Phelps scored twice in the game and Katy Lawlor added the final score for ASU. Traci Aparicio, Lauren Hayes, Bonnie Miles, Phelps and Kristen Wagner each added assists.

Wallace, with her nine saves, helped the defense blank SJSU on the advantage, keeping the Spartans scoreless on all seven 6-on-5 attempts. Offensively, the Sun Devils scored on four of their seven chances.
