Mountain West Championships: UNLV Men And BYU Women Take Titles After Final Day

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma, March 1. THE UNLV men won their fourth consecutive Mountain West Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championship with 800 team points, while the BYU women won their seventh overall women's team title in nine years with 763 points Saturday night at the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatics Center.

For the men, BYU finished second with 642.50 points, followed by Wyoming (629), Air Force (531), TCU (472) and Utah (352.50).

On the women's side, UNLV followed the Cougars with 622 points. Utah was next at 579, followed by Wyoming (574.50), Colorado State (359), TCU (276.50), New Mexico (262), San Diego State (161) and Air Force (151).

Awards were announced at the conclusion of the meet. UNLV senior Richard Hortness and TCU junior R.J. Hesselberg were named MWC Swimmer and Diver of the Year, respectively. UNLV's Jim Reitz was voted as men's swimming coach of the year, while Wyoming's Ben Herdt was named men's diving coach of the year and Johan Claar (UNLV) earned the men's Senior Recognition Award. UNLV's Kim Bonney brought home two awards this year, as she was named Conference Women's Swimmer of the Year and earned the Senior Recognition Award. BYU's Tawni Jones was awarded MWC Diver of the Year. Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson and BYU's Keith Russell were named MWC Women's Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year, respectively.
