North Carolina AAA High School State Championships

RALEIGH, North Carolina, February 25. CHARLOTTE Catholic ran the table on both sides of the North Carolina 3A High School State Championship meet for the third straight year.

Team Scores
The Charlotte Catholic women won the Class AAA title for their third straight year, winning with 358.5 points. Reagan placed second with 256 points while Marvin Ridge finished third (209).

Charlotte Catholic's men's team also won its third straight championship, amassing 305.5 points. Lake Normal fell behind in a distant second with 172 points while Tuscola placed third with 148 points.

Women's Individual Results
Charlotte Catholic snagged two relay event wins, each in Class AAA record time.

The 200 medley relay foursome of Mary Kate Hetzel, Christen McDonough, Keri McAfee and Jordan Koletic finished first in 1:51.32, ousting the 1998 record of 1:54.07 set by Soutwest Guilford in the event. Hetzel, Erin Gaeckel, Koletic and McAfee joined up in the 400 freestyle relay, placing first with a time of 3:38.17. The contingent shaved three seconds off of the old standard of 3:41.18, which Charlotte Catholic set in 2006.

McAfee doubled up event wins in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly. Her 200 IM time of 2:07.31 took down the former mark of 2:07.80 set by Lauren Fayssoux of Forestview in 2004. She reset her 100 butterfly record (57.12) as well, swimming a time of 56.39. McAfee is a Swimming World four-star recruit who will remain in state next year as she suits up for the University of North Carolina.

Men's Individual Results
Charlotte Catholic went two-for-three in the relay events, setting a Class AAA record in one event. The 200 medley relay team comprised of Ham Hollett, Chase Haislip, Charlie Hetzel and Collin Thilo clocked a 1:38.93, eclipsing the 1999 standard of 1:40.20 set by East Chapel Hill in 1999. The 400 freestyle relay team of Hollett, Hetzel, Kit Frederick and Thilo joined up at the meet's end to win in a 3:16.90 time.

Hetzel notched two wins, taking first place in the 200 IM (1:55.34) as well as in the 100 butterfly (49.60).

Mason Chenier of Eastern Wayne took home Class AAA titles in the sprint freestyle events with wins in the 50 (21.50) and 100 (47.00) freestyles.
