North Central Conference Championships: Day One

OMAHA, Nebraska, February 21. THE Fighting Sioux swimming and diving teams started their final NCC Championship with a bang Tuesday afternoon. After the first day of competition, both the men's and women's team are leading in the team rankings.

Junior Natalia Busso (Sao Paulo, Brazil) led the Fighting Sioux and set a NCC record along her way, taking top honors in the 1,000-meter freestyle with her time of 10:22.47. UND's Jessica Carlson took fourth place in the event with a time of 10:35.78 while Brittney Jamerson claimed seventh.

The UND men captured first-place in all four events of the day. Erik Anderson (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) finished first in the 1,000-meter freestyle (9:45.90) with Chase Fillingham (So., Bloomington, Ill.) taking second-place with his time of 9:53.40. Teammates Lucas Baarlaer (Sr., Boulder, Colo.) and Jeremy Blakenship (So., Studio City, Calif.) claimed fourth and fifth places in the event.

Daniel Moraes (So., Salvador, Brazil) took the top spot in the 200 IM while Fillingham took second. On the women's side, Cathryn DeShaw (So., Stillwater, Minn.) finished in fourth in the event with her time of 2:09.36.

Carissa Gormally (So., Williston, N.D.) claimed first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.41 while Anthony Buhr (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) took the top spot in the event on the men's side with his time of 20.88.

Both the men's and women's teams clinched first in the 200 yard medley relay team. The women's team of DeShaw, Kaylyn Wendroth (Fr., Rochester, Minn.), Allison Maxwell (So., Williston, N.D.) and Gormally finished with a combined time of 1:45.57 while the men's team of Moraes, Pedro Pereira (Sr., Barra Do Pirai, Brazil), Eric Knight (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) and Buhr finished with a time of 1:31.84.

On the diving side, North Dakota was led in the 3-meter by Stephenie Varichak (Fr., Fridley, Minn.), who took fifth while teammate Katie Girard (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) claimed sixth place in the event.

Qualifying for the NCAA Championships after day one on the men's side were Anderson in the 1,000-meter freestyle ("B" cut) and Moraes in the 200-meter IM ("B" cut) while Buhr qualified in the 50-meter freestyle ("A" cut) and the 200 yard medley relay team ("A" cut) joined them. Joining them is the women's 200 yard medley relay team ("A" cut) and Busso in the 1,000-meter freestyle ("B" cut).
