Atlantic 10 Championships: Day Two

BUFFALO, New York, February 20. FAMILIAR faces sit atop the medal stand after the second day of competition, as the Richmond women and Massachusetts men gained the lead at the Atlantic 10 Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving Championships at the Flickinger Center.

On the men's leader board, the Minutemen lead with a total of 263.5 points, 56.5 points ahead of second place St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies have 207 points, followed by Xavier (167), Duquesne (156), Fordham (155.5), George Washington (124), La Salle (117) and Saint Louis (116).

In the first event of the evening, Fordham junior Caitlin Napoli won gold in the women's 500-yard freestyle, breaking up a four-year winning streak held by Richmond as she touched for a time of 4:52.07. For the men, Xavier sophomore Nathan Green swam to a first-place finish with a time of 4:29.32, beating out Duquesne sophomore Edward LeBlanc by only .45 seconds.

The Spiders earned its first gold of the night in the women's 200-yard IM, as senior Lauren Beaudreau finished on top in the event (2:00.11) for the fourth time in her career. With that time she also broke her own record that she had set in 2007. Following suit, George Washington senior David Zenk posted a gold finish on the men's side with a conference-record time of 1:48.35 to also win the event for a fourth year in a row.

Richmond sits atop the women's standings with a score of 262. Fordham sits in second place with 195.5 points, 66.5 behind the Spiders. Duquesne is in third place (186), followed by Massachusetts in fourth (164.5), La Salle in fifth (143), Xavier in sixth (108), St. Bonaventure in seventh (99) Saint Louis in eighth (97), George Washington in ninth (78) and Rhode Island in tenth (77).

In the one meter diving competition, freshman Jason Cook extended the Minutemen lead and helped the team to a medal stand sweep with a gold medal score of 325.10. Junior Byron Johnson earned silver (271.65) and sophomore John Clark (265.40) finished off the UMass sweep.

Duquesne senior Christina Sherrard capped off her career with gold in the 50-yard freestyle, posting a time of 23.34. Her teammate, fellow senior Katrina Streiner's third-place touch (23.47) helped the Dukes post a gold and bronze finish in the sprint. The St. Bonaventure men's team played copycat with a gold and bronze of its own, with sophomore David Kundzik touching for gold (20.61) and senior Pat Henahan for bronze (20.79) to push the team up in the standings.

In the final events of the evening, the Richmond women's team of juniors Katie Sieben and Alex Helland, sophomore Nicole LePere and freshman Charlotte Brackett won in a time of 1:33.00. For the men's 200-yard free, the combination of Kundzik and Henahan again led St. Bonaventure to gold. The two teamed with sophomores Chris Baker and Jared Robinson to touch in a time of 1:21.97.

The third day begins at 10:30 am with morning preliminaries. Finals will commence at 6:30 pm.
