Marlins of Raleigh Win North Carolina Senior Championships

HUNTERSVILLE, North Carolina, February 18. ACCORDING to a press release sent out by the Marlins of Raleigh (MOR), the team won its first state championship at the North Carolina Senior Championships held in Huntersville, N.C. over the weekend.

At the meet, which featured nearly 500 senior-level swimmers from the state, MOR trailed perennial champ SwimMAC-Carolina by 59.5 points going into the final day. MOR, however, had a strong final day and claimed the overall state title with 948.5 points against MAC's 919.5.

MOR pulled off the upset by placing six women in the top 16 of Sunday's 1650 free and 200 IM, and three women's relays in the top eight in the 400 medley relay. Additionally, MOR's Kirsten Smith won both the 200 IM and 200 back. Taylor Harris won the men's 200 back as well.

Swimming World five-star recruit Smith, 2006 National Junior Team captain and Florida recruit, won her third consecutive Senior Champs High Point Award outdistancing Swimming World five-star recruit Hannah Caron, who is heading to Utah. Smith won the 200 back, 200 breast, 200/400 IMs.
