College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships: Day Two

KENOSHA, Wisconsin, February 15. THE Wheaton women and Carthage men continued to hold the overall lead in the team standings after the second day of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Swimming Championships.

The women's team scores include: Wheaton (641), Carthage (553.5), Illinois Wesleyan (233.5), Augustana (219), Rose-Hulman (188), Millikin (175) and North Central (108). The men's team scores include: Carthage (664), Wheaton (517), Rose-Hulman (375), Illinois Wesleyan (247), Millikin (160.5), Augustana (110.5) and North Central (71).

The night began with Carthage winning the women's 200-yard medley relay as Sarah Reynertson, Amy Mueller, Michelle Pelka and Amanda Croix won with a time of 1:49.77. Wheaton's women's team of Sloan Skinner, Renee Shear, Katherine Burt and Bethany Jacobs took second, clocking in at 1:50.37. Wheaton won the 200 medley relay on the men's side as Doug Hoffer, Jonathan Nitz, Matthew Gallagher and Tim Linn clocked a time of 1:33.91. Carthage's Chris Varner, Stephen Schranck, Bryce Davis and Andy Bax placed second with a time of 1:34.57.

In the women's 400-yard individual medley, Pelka came away the winner with a meet-record time of 4:30.94, beating the previous best time of 4:35.01 set by Wheaton's Katlin Marko last season. Marko placed second this season with a time of 4:33.62. Carthage's Kyle Drake won the men's title in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:08.97 while Wheaton's Ethan Cramer was second (4:10.38).

Carolyn Kelly of Carthage won the women's 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.34 while Wheaton's Kristina Sedjo was second at 1:02.68. Davis earned the 100 butterfly title for Carthage on the men's side. He set the meet record during the preliminary round earlier in the day with a time of 50.45, then broke it again in the finals, clocking in at 50.31. Rose-Hulman's Adam Effinger placed second at 50.61.

In the women's 200-yard freestyle, Carthage's Croix picked up the title (1:54.48) while Wheaton's Liz Hartman was second (1:54.59). On the men's side, Carthage's Paul Busse won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.24. Rose-Hulman's Steven Vande Lune was second with a time of 1:44.78.

Wheaton's Shear was the champion in the women's 100-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 1:09.14. North Central's Stefanie Masterton placed second (1:09.16). Carthage's Schranck won another conference title for the men with a time of 57.55. Wheaton's Nitz was second at 58.75.

Jillian Morris from Wheaton won the 100-yard backstroke (59.23), followed by Augustana's Ramsey Vens (59.61). For the men, Drake was the winner for Carthage with a time of 53.07 while Rose-Hulman's Nick Lee was second with a time of 53.75.

The 800-yard freestyle relay concluded Friday's finals as the Wheaton women's team of Marko, Ashley Matthiesen, Becky Bird and Hartman won with a time of 7:51.76. Carthage's Alyssa Messina, Caroline Kochmit, Paige Preusse and Michelle Mulhall was second (8:18.87). On the men's side, Carthage's Nathan Ripley, Schranck, Drake and Paul Busse won with a time of 6:58.29. Rose-Hulman's Jacob Sorensen, Brian Yount, Effinger and Vande Lune was second (7:03.69).
