California v. Cal State Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, California, February 8. THE No. 11-ranked California men's swimming and diving team upended CS Bakersfield, 133-78, on Thursday afternoon at Hillman Aquatics Center. The Bears finished atop the first eight races. Cal got off to an early win in the 400 medley relay, with senior William Copeland, freshman Damir Dugonjic, senior Dominik Meichtry, and freshman Alex Cushing, finishing first in 3:23.80. Senior Michael Jafari captured the 1000 free (9:37.61), sophomore Scott Sorge won the 200 free (1:42.19), freshman Graeme Moore finished first in the 50 free with a time of 21.11, senior Mark Eckert won the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.33, junior David Russell was victorious in the 200 butterfly (1:51.88) and senior Joe Whittington came out atop the 100 free (45.23). Junior diver Sam Helvie was also victorious, capturing the one-meter competition with a score of 344.40.

Cal, under the direction of first-year coach David Durden, saw its dual meet record rise to 4-1 overall and 2-1 against Pac-10 competition. The Roadrunners fell to 1-4 in dual meet action.

The Bears swam the last five events in exhibition, having already secured victory. Sophomore Matt Scanlan finished the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:48.66, Jafari was the top finisher in the 500 free (4:40.19) and the Cal relay of Sorge, senior Richard Hunter, freshman Daniel Smith and Dugonjic finished the 400 free relay in a time of 3:05.97. Helvie scored 380.70 in the three-meter competition.
