Mary Washington vs. Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pennsylvania, January 26. GETTYSBURG women's swimming team received a meet-clinching victory in the 400-free relay and the Bullets stayed perfect at 7-0 on the season with an exciting 110-95 non-conference win over No. 15-ranked Mary Washington Saturday afternoon at the College Union Building Natatorium.

In men's action, the Bullets fell to 3-3 on the season with a 113-92 loss.

Mary Washington fell to 9-2 on the women's side and suffered its first loss of the season against at Division III opponent, as the Eagles' only loss heading into the meet was a 106-91 setback to William & Mary on Dec. 1. UMW's men's team dropped to 8-3.

The women's meet went back-and-forth for most of the day, with neither side building more than a single-digit lead. With Gettysburg leading 97-91 after 10 events, the meet would be decided by the final event, the 400-free relay, and junior Caitlin Reilly (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) set the tone with an outstanding leadoff leg.

Reilly gave the Bullets a two-body lead with a 54.78 split and Gettysburg never looked back, as freshman Maggie Mulderrig (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep School), freshman Susannah Ferrer (Darien, Conn./Darien), and junior Demery Close (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) completed the relay in 3:43.11, 4.76 seconds in front of Mary Washington, to earn 11 points and clinch the meet. Mulderrig was clocked at 56.03 for her split while Ferrer and Close were timed at 56.97 and 55.33, respectively.

Winning two individual events for the Bullets was freshman Alex Newman (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel), who touched the wall first in both the 1,000-free (10:57.94) and the 500-free (5:21.32). Other individual winners were Mulderrig in the 50-free (25.54) and Reilly in the 100-free (55.00).

The men's team came away with four victories on the day. The 400-medley relay team of freshman Adam Taft (Wilton, Conn./Wilton), freshman Brian Kaehler (Marassas, Va./Brentsville), senior Matt Bacon (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette), and senior Pete Levin (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Regional) led off the meet by winning their event in 3:43.60. Taft also captured the 200-back (1:59.81) while Kaehler won the 200-breast (2:17.83). Junior Matt Rush (Lenox, Mass./Lenox) added a first-place finish in the 200-free (1:48.80).

Both teams travel to Swarthmore College next Saturday in a Centennial Conference meet starting at 2 p.m.
