Tennessee vs. Georgia

ATHENS, Georgia, January 21. THE Georgia swimming and diving teams concluded the dual-meet portion of their home schedule by sweeping Tennessee on Saturday at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

The ninth-ranked Bulldogs posted a 165-135 victory over the No. 21 Volunteers, while the No. 1 Lady Bulldogs defeated the No. 14 Lady Vols 169-131 on Senior Day.

"It was really a job well done by our young men and young ladies today," Georgia coach Jack Bauerle said. "Neither meet was decided until the latter stages, so we had to stay sharp and stay tough. I am very proud of the efforts. We've still got some areas that need improving, but all in all, it was a good day for our teams."

The Bulldogs improved to 5-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the SEC, and the Lady Bulldogs improved to 7-1 and 4-0. The Lady Bulldogs also extended their school record with their 78th consecutive victory at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The Georgia women have won 20 of their last 21 and 53 of their last 55 dual meets overall.

On Saturday, Michael Arnold and Will Freeman were double winners for the Bulldogs. Arnold won the 50 freestyle in 20.21 and the 100 butterfly in 48.45. Freeman took the 1,000 freestyle in 9:04.23 and the 200 butterfly in 1:49.94.

Jameson Hill touched in 1:37.60 to win the 200 freestyle. Nic Fink's time of 55.23 was good enough to win the 100 breaststroke. Jared Markham claimed the 200 backstroke in 1:47.19. Martin Grodzki went 4:25.14 to win the 500 freestyle.

The 400 freestyle relay of Hill, Doug Reynolds, John Simmons and Arnold closed the meet by winning in 2:59.16.

For the women, Michelle McKeehan claimed the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.24 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.69. Maddie Locus won the 50 freestyle in 22.44 (the fastest dual-meet time in school history) and the 100 freestyle in 49.43.

Wendy Trott had a winning time of 9:48.01 in the 1,000 freestyle. Kelsey Gaid went 1:57.21 to claim the 200 backstroke. Melanie Margalis stopped the clock in 1:58.62 for the 200 individual medley title.

Georgia's teams will conclude the regular season next Saturday at Alabama. Georgia then will compete in the SEC Championships Feb. 15-18 at Tennessee. The Lady Bulldogs are the two-time defending conference champs.
