Pacific, Cal Poly v. UC Davis

DAVIS, California, January 19. THE UC Davis men's swimming and diving team won 10 of the 16 events to sweep duals with Pacific and Cal Poly, while the women's team defeated Cal Poly and lost to Pacific during the home-opening meet at the Schaal Aquatics Center.

The men defeated Pacific (168-121) and Cal Poly (177-118) to push their dual record to 4-1. The Aggie women took a 189-111 decision over the Mustangs, but lost to the Tigers, 172-122, to run their dual record to 9-3 on the season.

Sophomore Daniel Donnelly was the best all-around swimmer on the day for UC Davis as he won three individual events and swam the third leg on the winning 200 medley relay team. Donnelly captured wins the 100 backstroke (51.15), and the 100 (50.31) and 200 butterfly events (1:52.31). He also teamed with Jimmy Fong, Russell Taylor and Jason Kim to take the top spot in the meet-opening 200 medley relay in 1:33.91.

Taylor also claimed a win the 100 breaststroke (57.10) and placed second in the 200 breast (2:06.54). Other individual victories included freshman Matt Herman in the 1,000 freestyle (9:19.08), sophomore Evan Kraus in the 50 free (21.17) and Alex Arbios in the 500 free (4:34.83). Kraus also had a second-place showing in the 100 free (47.21), which were stacked back-to-back in the 16-event format.

The Aggie men swam the final two events (200 individual medley and 400 free relay) as exhibitions. They had the best time in the 400 free relay as Kraus, Kim, Walter Eggert and Nik Kemp clocked in at 3:09.62.

The diving teams also returned after a two month break and gained wins on three of the four boards. Senior Krysta Chaldekas was the top woman diver as she won on both 1-meter and 3-meter board with scores of 226.43 and 248.70, respectively. Freshman Paul Navo won on the high board for the men (245.25) and placed second on the low board (227.03). Fellow freshman Jamie Flynn finished second on both boards behind Chaldekas.

The women ended the meet on a high note by winning the 400 free relay in 3:31.87. The team consisted of freshman Linda Hermann, and seniors Melanie Covert, Jennifer Ginsberg and Jill Olson.

UC Davis also had several swimmers claim second place during the meet. That list included Fong finishing second in both back events. Although the women only won one race, they had a total of seven swimmers finish second.
