Cal State Bakersfield v. Loyola Marymount

LOS ANGELES, California – LMU remained unbeaten in dual meets this season after earning a 154-104 victory over visiting Cal State Bakersfield at Burns Aquatic Center. The Lions captured first place in eight of the 14 events en route to the win, led by Angela Samuels and Rebecca Plume who each contributed 18 individual points.

Bakersfield took the top spot in both the 200 medley relay and the 1000 freestyle to start the meet. The team of Stephanie Donnelly, Veronica Campbell, Lexie Kelly and Erin Craft finished first with a time of 1:53.95. LMU's Alex Wike, Melanie Tansuwan, Gillian Ghazal and Alexa Cook placed second in 1:55.13. A second LMU team, comprised of Alicia Witter, Alyssa Geraghty, Megan Sawelson and Liz Magura, claimed the final two relay points in 1:55.84.

Leah Felber claimed first in the 1000 freestyle, turning in a time of 11:05.64. Christine Gore and Kristina Fernandez finished second and third for the Lions, touching the wall in 11:10.30 and 11:37.82, respectively.

After setting a LMU record in the 1000 freestyle yesterday, Plume led a trio of Lions who swept the top-three spots in the 200 freestyle today. The junior hit the wall in 1:56.81 to claim the spot, followed by teammates Sawelson (1:57.88) and Julia Hall (2:01.71) in second and third.

The Roadrunners proved strong in the 100 backstroke, claiming the top-two spots in the race with times of 1:01.31 and 1:01.48, handed-in by Craft and Donnelly, in that order. LMU finished third through fifth in the race, with Witter (1:02.60), Kim McKay (1:03.20) and Wike (1:03.67) finishing in those spots.

Bakersfield once again took the top-two honors in a race, this time finishing first and second in the 100 breaststroke. Campbell finished the race in 1:09.36 to take first, while Tessa Brown finished approximately a second later at 1:10.44. Magura and Geraghty finished third and fourth for the Lions in 1:11.15 and 1:11.87, respectively.

Samuels claimed her first first-place finish on the day in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 2:11.91, followed by CSUB's Kelly at 2:15.38 and LMU's Katie Mistry in 2:20.55 to claim third. The Lions swept the top-three spots in the day's seventh event, the 50 freestyle, as Wike (25.07), Carolyn Pasque (25.32) and Aja Kusao (25.60) finished first, second and third.

Showing dominance in the freestyle events, LMU once again swept the top-three spots in the 100 freestyle. Plume claimed her second first-place finish on the day in 54.80, followed by Danielle Garcia in 56.01 and Cook at 56.26.

Donnelly and Craft performed well for Bakersfield in the 200 backstroke, finishing first and second in 2:11.94 and 2:12.20, respectively. Kristen Lutjen claimed third for the Lions with a time of 2:13.10, followed by Nicole Alvarado at 2:25.05.

Geraghty and the Lions took first in the 10th event of the day, the 200 breaststroke, with a time of 2:31.54. Brown claimed second in 2:32.56, followed by Pasque (2:39.29) and Maeghan Cobbin (2:40.42) in third and fourth places.

The Lions remained dominant in the freestyle events, sweeping first through third yet again at the 500 distance. Witter (5:16.30), Hall (5:22.86) and McKay (5:24.89) earned those ranks, in that order.

For the second time on the day, Samuels earned a first-place finish, this time winning the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.65. Trinity O'Neill edged Bakersfield's Kelly with a time of 1:01.45 compared to 1:01.50 to claim second place and garner four points for LMU. Mistry touched the wall in 1:03.28 to nab fourth place, followed by Lacey Payne at 1:06.67 to round out the scoring.

After Kelly claimed first place for Bakersfield in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.26, LMU took second, third and fourth as Magura (2:15.33), Tansuwan (2:16.73) and Mallorie Lim (2:17.16) finished in those spots, respectively.

LMU's relay team of Plume, Wike, Pasque and Witter defeated the nearest Bakersfield team by over 10 seconds in the 400 freestyle relay, as the Lions raced to a 3:43.54 mark compared to the 3:55.02 time set by Campbell, Brown, Rachel Schell and Felber.
