Paul Bergen Junior International Opens Up Friday

PORTLAND, Oregon, December 7. THE first day of the Paul Bergen Junior International meet hosted by Tualatin Hills opened up with a quick start in the short course meter format. With more than 250 swimmers age 18 and younger from the United States, Canada, France, Germany and Mexico battling it out for national pride, quick times were assured.

During the initial day of swimming, nine meet records fell by the wayside, while several world-class swims were also posted to the scoreboard.

Stephanie Horner of Canada opened the meet with a 2:08.54 in the women's 200 fly to crush the old meet record. Meanwhile, Jonathan Blouin, also of Canada, eclipsed the meet record with a winning time of 1:57.70.

The 100 backstroke first featured Gabrielle Soucisse of Canada winning the women's event in 59.62, while Germany's Felix Wolf touched in 53.87 to win the men's race.

Then, in the 200 breaststroke events, Chelsey Salli of Canada took home the title in 2:27.00, while Michael Cai of Canada captured the men's title in 2:14.43.

Erica Morningstar of Canada dominated the women's 100 free with a time of 53.35, while Clemens Rapp of Germany dropped a winning time of 49.75 in the men's 100 free.

Horner returned with her second meet record, when she hit the wall in 4:36.56 in the 400 IM, while Zack Summerhays of Canada snatched the men's 400 IM meet record with a time of 4:19.45.

The 800 freestyle relays capped the night as Germany set a meet record with a time of 8:11.85 in the women's race, while the Germans also clipped the meet record in the men's relay with a time of 7:19.07.
