Simon Sjodin Shines at Swedish Short Course Nationals as National Records Tumble

JONKOPING, Sweden, November 22. SIMON Sjodin had a day to remember as the Swedish Short Course National Championships commenced on Nov. 22. By the end of the day, Sjodin captured a national record trifecta at the swift meet.

The national records started to fall in the men's 200 medley relay when Sjodin (25.22), Christer Tour (27.07), Stefan Nystrand (22.85) and Petter Stymne (21.44) clocked in at 1:36.58 to shatter the previous record of 1:38.51 that stood since Nov. 23, 2006.

Sjodin then returned in the men's 200 IM with an individual national record. When he hit the wall in 1:58.78, he knocked a chunk off the 1:59.64 set by Erik Samuelsson earlier this week. Samuelsson, meanwhile, joined Sjodin in the 1:58 club, but came up just short of the title with a second-place time of 1:58.92.

Sjodin captured his third national standard of the day as the men's 800 freestyle relay squad of Stymne (1:51.33), Nystrand (1:44.35), Peter Edvardsson (1:49.52) and Sjodin (1:48.24) clocked a time of 7:13.44. The performance smashed the previous record of 7:17.06 that stood since March 28, 1997.

Other men's winners included Johan Claar (200 fly – 2:00.97) and Per Nylin (50 back – 25.24), while Petra Granlund (200 free – 1:55.78), Ida Sandin (400 IM – 4:41.37) and Hanna Westrin (50 breast – 31.36) all emerged victorious on the women's side.

Finally, the quartet of Sandin, Therese Mattsson, Malin Svahnstrom and Granlund took home the women's 400 freestyle relay crown in 3:42.27.
