Maine vs. Fairfield

Fairfield, Connecticut, November 11. THE University of Maine Swimming and Diving team swept a dual meet against Fairfield University Sunday afternoon. The women's team is now 3-0 on the season after beating the Stags 163-80. The men's team picked up their first win of the season 138-102, improving their season record to 1-2.

For the women, Caitlin Shelley and Kari Boffa each won two individual events, paving the way to Maine's third straight victory. Shelley won the 200m freestyle in 2:14.60 and also won the 100m breaststroke, 1:18.24. Boffa paced the Black Bears in the freestyle sprint events on Sunday afternoon, winning the 50 and 100m freestyles in 29.06 and 1:01.77 respectively. Adi Levy finished first in the 800m freestyle in a time of 9:30.27, and Kiki O'Donnell won the 200m IM with at 2:31.97. The 100m butterfly saw Maine sweep the top three places with Colleen Miller coming in first, followed by Mackenzie Grobmyer and Nissa Marione. The women's 200m medley and freestyle `A' and `B' relay teams came first and second respectively.

On the men's side, Maine received another outstanding day of performances by Jeremy Bender who won the 800m freestyle in 9:05.99 and came second in the 100m butterfly, 1:04.31. Cully Wakelin added a win in the 50m freestyle in 25.08, and Kevin Staples took first in the 100m freestyle in 56.60. In the 100m backstroke Maine swept the top three places, with Mike Goede leading the pack at 1:06.07, followed by Zach Cravens, 1:07.99, and Chase Filaroska, 1:09.80. Keith Burgie was the top diver on the day for the Black Bears placing winning the 1 meter dive and placing second in the 3 meter dive. The men also won both the 200m medley and freestyle relay events.

The women's team returns to Wallace Pool on Sunday, November 18 to square off against Vermont beginning at 11 a.m. Both teams will take on Bowdoin College Monday, November 19, in Brunswick at 6 p.m.
