Northwestern Sweeps UIC (M:152;83; W:161-70)

EVANSTON, Illinois, October 27. COMPETING for the second time on the opening weekend of the 2007-08 season,
Northwestern defeated Illinois-Chicago Saturday afternoon at the Norris Aquatics Center, 152-83.

The Wildcats now are 1-1 on the season in dual-meet action.

Northwestern began the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, earning a time of 1:33.92 from the
team of Jake Vogel (Canton, Ill./Canton), John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep),
Charlie Cunnick (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport Central) and Chris Doman (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Prep).

Junior Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 1,000 free for NU, blowing away
the field by more than 28 seconds with a time of 9:20.02. Andy Long (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley)
was second and Daniel Walls (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) took third for the 'Cats.

Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) won the 200 free with a time of 1:40.95, while teammate
Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) took second with a 1:42.58. In the 50 free, Bruno Barbic
(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gymnazija) swam a 21.16 to win, while freshman Sean Mathews (St. Louis,
Mo./Lafayette) was second with a time of 21.84.

Illinois-Chicago won its first race of the meet with a victory in the 400 IM, but Northwestern
captured second, third and fourth. Vogel was second with a 4:11.10, Alex Tyler (Birmingham,
Mich./Birmingham Groves) was right on Vogel's heels with a 4:11.18, and Adam Lewno (Racine,
Wis./J.I.Case) finished fourth with a 4:19.62.

In 3-meter diving action during the first part of the meet, senior Ryan McIntosh (Louisville,
Ky./Trinity ) won the event for NU with a score of 294.83, while junior Alex Kiaie (Milwaukee,
Wis./Nicolet) was second with a 267.75.

In the 100 fly, Park was NU's top finisher with a second-place time of 50.69, just .05 seconds out
of first. Freshman Truman Liang (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hunter College High School) won the 100 free with a
47.21, edging teammate Cunnick by .04 seconds.

The Wildcats then swept the 100 back, with Bubolz capturing first with a time of 52.34, while Vogel
was .42 seconds back with a 52.76. Eric Simpson (Wellesley Mass./Wellesley) was third with a 54.32
for NU.

In 1-meter diving for the 'Cats, McIntosh again took first, this time with a score of 296.25 to
best Kiaie by 1.5 points.

Just before the second break of the meet, Mathews won the 500 free with a time of 4:39.99, with
Long taking second in 4:47.27. Coming out of the break, Alex Hostoffer (Cleveland, Ohio/Gilmour
Academy) won the 100 breast with a 59.11.

The Wildcats then concluded the meet with a win in the 200 free relay, with Nilsson, Barbic, Walls
and Franklin combining on a 1:26.33.

The Wildcats return to action at 1 p.m. CT Saturday, Nov. 3, at Purdue.

On the Women's Side, Northwestern won all but one event in its second meet of the 2007-08 season,
defeating Illinois-Chicago Saturday afternoon at the Norris Aquatics Center, 161-70.

The Wildcats now are 1-1 on the season in dual-meet action.

The Wildcats began the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, swimming a 1:46.32 with Katie
Eschenburg (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead), Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar), Katie Braun (Edina,
Minn./Edina) and Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) comprising the winning group.

Freshman Ellen Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) captured the 1,000 freestyle with a
time of 10:16.61, while classmate Kate Stephensen (Davis, Calif./Davis Senior) was second with a
10:57.67.

Wong then led a sweep of the 200 free for the 'Cats, swimming a 1:53.65 to edge out teammate Stacy
Congdon (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep), who had a second-place time of 1:53.82. Jenn Kocsis
(Omaha, Neb./Marian) swam a 1:55.87 to take third.

Illinois-Chicago won its first race of the meet in the 50 free, with NU taking second through
fourth in the event. Eschenburg was second with a 24.81, Fry took third in 24.87 and Caitlin Masney
(Hong Kong, China/Chinese International School) was fourth with a 25.85.

Northwestern again swept an event, this time in the 400 IM, led by a 4:25.14 from Kassia Shishkoff
(Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School). Mary Beth Francis (San Diego, Calif./Mission Viejo) was second
and Liza Engstrom (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen) took third.

Leanne Dumais (Ventura, Calif./Buena) won the 1-meter diving competition during the first part of
the meet with a 286.73, 49 points better than the second-place finisher. Tania Lyerly
(Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) was third for NU with a 237.75, just .08 points out of second place.

Braun took first in the 100 fly for the 'Cats with a 55.68, while Rachel Rys (Goleta, Calif./Dos
Pueblos) was second (57.02) and Alex Kraus (Birmingham, Ala./Vestavia Hills) was third (58.11).

Shishkoff won the 100 free for NU with a 52.41, topping teammates Congdon, Erin Reilly (Frankfort,
Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and Masney, who all finished second through fourth, respectively.

Engstrom came out on top of the 100 back with a 57.69, then Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines)
and Andrea Hupman (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood) took the top two spots in the 500 free.
Szymanski's winning time was a 5:06.95.

On the 3-meter diving board, Dumais again blew away the field, this time with a 285.15. Lyerly was
second with a 229.35 and Beth Campbell (Burr Ridge, Ill./Fenwick) took third with a 216.52.

After the break following the 500 free, Fry won the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.33 for the 'Cats.

To finish off the meet, Northwestern's 200 free relay team of Hupman, Shishkoff, Kraus and
Szymanski won with a time of 1:38.90.

The Wildcats return to action at 1 p.m. CT Saturday, Nov. 3, at Purdue.
