Big Ten Conference Announces Weekly Awards

CHICAGO, Illinois, October 23. THE Big Ten Conference announced its weekly award winners for this past weekend. On the women's side, Penn State's Caitlin Meehan (swimmer) and Michigan State's Danielle Williams (diving) won special notice, while the men had three student-athletes earn citations. Minnesota's Curt Carlson and Penn State's Pat Schirk shared swimmer of the week kudos, while Iowa's Frank Van Dijkhuizen took diver of the week.

In her first meet of the year, Meehan posted three first-place finishes directing the Nittany Lions to an impressive 227-73 win over West Virginia. Her times in the 100-(1:03.33) and 200-yard (2:16.56) breaststrokes met NCAA ‘B' standards. Meehan's involvement in the 400 medley relay lead to a winning time of 3:44.03 which also hit the NCAA ‘B' time. The junior swimmer also took part in the third-place 400 freestyle relay squad that posted a time of 3:32.80. The junior from West Chester, Pa. collects her first weekly Big Ten honor.

Williams out-dove the competition this weekend, notching two first-place finishes in the 157-141 win over Illinois. The Spartan junior keyed MSU divers to a 30-6 point advantage. Off the one-meter board she totaled 321.08 and scored 302.40 from the three-meter. The diver from Ontario picks up her first weekly award.

Carlson swept all three of his events to claim triumph over Iowa, 188.5-113.5. He clocked in at 46.15 and 1:40.68 in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles, respectively. Carlson's participation in the 400 freestyle relay helped his team post a first-place time of 3:04.08. The Gopher freshman takes home his first weekly award.

Schirk racked up three first-place finishes in a 194-106 home victory over West Virginia. The junior dominated both the 100-and 200-yard backstrokes in times of 50.37 and 1:47.33, respectively. His time in the 200 back escaped the NCAA ‘B' cut standard by only six tenths of second. Schirk also swam leadoff in the 400 medley relay in a winning time of 3:21.94. The Pottstown, Pa., native collects his first weekly award.

Dijkhuizen scored valuable points for the Hawkeyes this past weekend in a losing battle to Minnesota. The sophomore diver posted two of the team's three first-place finishes. Dijkhuizen scored 287.93 off the one-meter board and 327.15 from the three-meter. The Netherlands native earns his second career Diver of the Week award.
