Meet of the Week Recap: Michigan Men Down Florida, 326-272; Florida Women Win Over Michigan, 354-285; Emily Brunemann Shines

GAINESVILLE, Florida, October 20. MICHIGAN and Florida closed down the initial entry in the SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Dual Meet of the Week series this weekend with some swift early-season times. The Michigan men emerged victorious over Florida, 326-272, while the Florida women upended Michigan, 354-285.

On the second day of swimming, the Michigan men claimed nine titles, while Florida captured five. Meanwhile, the Michigan women took home eight crowns, while the Florida women grabbed six.

Michigan's Emily Brunemann, the reigning national champion in the 1500 freestyle, provided the crown jewel of the meet with an automatic qualifying time in the event. She started the season off right with a time of 16:47.47 to clear the A-cut time of 16:48.76.

Other winners for the Michigan women include Justine Mueller in the 400 IM (4:57.87, B-cut) and 200 breast (2:40.16), Margaret Kelly in the 100 fly (1:04.27), Hannah Smith in the 200 back (2:20.89, B-cut), Melissa Jaeger in the 200 fly (2:21.48) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Smith (1:00.53), Payton Johnson (59.94), Jaeger (59.97) and Kelly (58.25) in 3:58.69 as well as Elise Lee in the three-meter with a tally of 315.30 points for a zone cut.

On Florida's side, Caroline Burckle shined with five titles throughout the day. First, she held the 200 medley relay to a win in 2:00.17 as part of the team of Samantha Vanderbilt (30.19), Burckle (33.07), Elizabeth Kemp (28.90) and Stephanie Napier (28.01). She also helped the 800 freestyle relay to a win in 8:33.28 as the third leg of the contingent of Laurabeth Guenther (2:07.55), Kemp (2:09.46), Burckle (2:06.96) and Jenne Ballatore (2:09.31).

Individually, Burckle won the 200 free (2:04.99, B-cut), 100 breast (1:13.99) and 100 free (57.65, B-cut). Meanwhile, Vanderbilt provided the other individual title for the Florida women with a 100 back B-cut time of 1:05.26.

Other B-cuts came from Michigan's Emily Hanson (17:16.09) and Florida's Laurabeth Guenther (16:51.21) in the 1500 free. Also, Katie Skendrovic qualified for zone diving with a tally of 283.28.

Additionally, a slew of divers earned zone qualifying totals in the three-meter for Florida as Jeanna Bartell (291.30), Whitney Stern (286.65), Jennifer Funch (283.80) and Monica Dodson (282.00) all qualified for zones.

In the men's meet, Michigan snagged the bulk of the titles. First, a 200 medley relay of unreported team members chipped in with a time of 1:45.96. Bobby Savulich claimed four titles, two as part of relays. He claimed the 100 free (51.93) and 200 free (1:55.01) titles individually, and was a part of the 400 and 800 freestyle relay wins. Michigan's 400 free relay team of Savulich (52.30), Chris Brady (51.70), Charlie Houchin (53.15) and Sal Barba (52.80) clocked a winning time of 3:29.95, while Savulich (1:55.45), Houchin (1:54.45), Sal Barba (1:57.69) and Alex Vanderkaay (1:55.56) won the 800 free relay in 7:43.15.

Other Michigan titlists came in the form of Tyler Clary in the 400 IM (4:28.92, B-cut), Chris Brady in the 100 fly (55.26, B-cut), Scott Spann in the 100 breast (1:05.64) and Kyle Schroeder in three-meter diving (309.98).

For Florida, five separate swimmers walked away with wins. Omar Pinzon captured the 100 back in a B-cut time of 58.37, while Tobias Work won the 1500 free in a B-cut time of his own of 15:47.44. Meanwhile, Roland Rudolf topped the 200 back in a B-cut time of 2:03.03, while Clark Burckle touched first in the 200 breast in 2:21.04. Finally, James Walsh took the 200 fly title in 2:05.49.

Five other swimmers recorded provisional qualifying times as Michigan's Matt Patton touched in 15:55.46 in the 1500 free and Clary turned in a 2:04.62 in the 200 back. For Florida, Dustin McLarty registered a 4:29.22 in the 400 IM, while Logan Storie hit the wall in 16:01.07 in the 1500 free. Rexford Tullius also notched a 2:04.11 in the 200 back.
