Budget for Beijing Olympics Takes a Hike

BEIJING, China, October 20. ACCORDING to the China Daily, the budget for next year's Olympic Games in Beijing has increased to $2 billion, up from $1.6 billion. The figure was announced by Liu Jingmin, the Executive Vice President of the Beijing Organizing Committee. The 2004 Olympics in Athens checked in with a budget of $2.4 billion.

China is intent on hosting a Games that are highly regarded, from what occurs in competition to how the nation is perceived by spectators from other countries. One of the top priorities is security and there have been promises that political issues will be kept out of the Olympics. More, the country has worked on cleaning the air, which has been an environmental concern.

More than 600,000 jobs have been created since work started toward the Games in 2001 and 27 of the 37 venues for the Olympics are ready. Construction on the remainder should be completed by the end of the year. The Olympic Stadium, which resembles a bird's nest, is expected to be ready by March.

"As the organizer of the 2008 Games, we advocate the Olympic spirit and carry forward the guidelines of peace, friendship and development," Liu said. "We want the Games to be the world's gathering of peace and friendship.".
