Australia’s John Fahey Tabbed as Next WADA President

SYDNEY, Australia, October 17. SHORTLY after France's Jean-Francois Lamour resigned his position as the vice president of the World Anti-Doping Agency, as reported here, Australia's John Fahey was named as Dick Pound's successor.

According to various media reports, Fahey will officially become the new president on Nov. 17 when the final election is held because he will be the only candidate up for the position. Additionally, Australian Sports Minister George Brandis announced that Fahey will become the "highest level international sporting appointment ever occupied by an Australian." Previously, Kevan Gosper had held that distinction after serving as vice president of the International Olympic Committee.

While completely coincidental, it is interesting that an Australian has been named the top doping watchdog just days after top Australian coach Don Talbot stated that performance-enhancing drugs might need to legalized because the sporting community cannot keep up with their use. Yesterday, however, Talbot somewhat backed off his initial comments in an interview with SwimNews.
