Marshall Swimming and Diving Defeats Ashland, 169-129

ASHLAND, Ohio, October 13. THE Marshall University swimming and diving team picked up its first win of the season Saturday, defeating Ashland University 169-129 to split its set of weekend meets.

"We swam little better as a team," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "We definitely had a better mindset and were able to pull away at the end. That was good to see."

Jenny Johnsson, who transferred to Marshall after swimming for Ashland last season, didn't disappoint in her return performance. The sophomore came away with victories in the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke and 400-yard individual medley.

Freshman Kristin Schroeder was second to Johnsson in the 200 back and made significant improvement on a personal best, turning in a time of 2:14.06 as Marshall took the top four spots in the event.

Marshall also dominated in the breaststroke as Michaela Sceli and Ally Melinsky finished one-two in both 100 and 200-yard events.

"The breaststrokers did a nice all the way through and that was a good sign," Kraus said. "I also thought our backstroke group was really strong today. Schroeder made some big strides."

In their first competition of the season the Herd divers came up big, finishing first, second, fourth and fifth in the one-meter event and taking the top four spots in the three-meter. Junior Siobhan Shuurman claimed meet titles in both events.

"Our divers did a fantastic job," Kraus said. "Overall we didn't swim well yesterday, but we did a little bit better today. Hopefully we'll get better next week."

The Thundering Herd will be in action again next weekend as it travels to Youngstown, Ohio to face Youngstown State and Wisconsin-Green Bay on Friday and to Pittsburgh to take on Duquesne on Saturday.
