Stanford Women Take Down San Jose State, 164-105

STANFORD, California, October 5. STANFORD (1-0) opened its 2007-08 season with a 164-105 victory over San Jose State (0-1) in a short-course yards non-conference women's swimming and diving meet at the Avery Aquatic Center. Caroline Bruce (100 breast, 200 back) and Julia Smit (200 breast, 1000 free) both won a pair of events for a Cardinal squad that captured 12 of the 16 races contested.

Brie Marhenke highlighted the Spartans' effort by sweeping the 50 and 100 free, while Caitlin Macky (200 IM) and San Jose State's 200 free relay team were credited with wins as Stanford swam exhibition in both events.

Bruce was the only swimmer for either team to reach an NCAA standard when she claimed a "B" mark of 1:03.58 in her 100 breast victory. She won the 200 back in a time of 2:05.59, while Smit's winning marks were 9:53.76 (1000 free) and 2:18.83 (200 breast). Meg Hostage's scored of 264.07 in her winning effort in the 1-meter diving competition also met an NCAA "B" standard.

Marhenke checked in at 23.58 in the 50 free and 52.07 in the 100 free. Macky recorded a 2:11.39 in the 200 IM that gave her the official win despite Elizabeth Smith of Stanford recording a 2:06.17 in an exhibition swim. The Spartans' 200 free relay team of Lauren Mar, Daphne Yeung, Marhenke and Meghan Mccurley checked in at 1:38.17, which was just under a second after Stanford's exhibition foursome of Kelley Hug, Brooke Bishop, Michelle Liu and Andrea Axtell in 1:37.18.

Other individual Stanford winners included Stefanie Sutton (200 free, 1:53.80), Bishop (100 back, 56.99), Hug (200 fly, 2:05.61), Elizabeth Durot (500 free, 4:57.09), Nilasha Ghosh (100 fly, 57.02) and Carmen Stellar (3-meter diving, 230.48). Stanford also won the 200 medley relay in 1:45.60 with a team of Fiona O'Donnell-McCarthy, Bruce, Hug and Smit.

"It's always exciting to begin the first meet of the season," said Stanford head coach Lea Maurer. "We have been training really hard, and it's good to have some accountability for where we are at. We came out with a good fight and good energy today."

"Everyone stepped up today in the first meet, and it led to a good outcome," added Bishop. "The freshmen were nervous, but now they have the experience of their first collegiate race so they will be fine. We all get along very well and have a good team dynamic."

The victory over the Spartans extended Stanford's regular season dual meet win streak to 11 in a row dating back to the team's perfect 10-0 dual meet campaign in 2006-07.
