South African Short Course: Lize-Mari Retief Sets Another African Record; Gerhard Zandberg Claims Sixth Title

PIETERMARTIZBURG, South Africa, October 2. THE third night of action at the South African Short Course Championships held in Pietermaritzburg witnessed some record-breaking performances.

Lize-Mari Retief shot down another African record at the meet when she hit the wall in 58.41 in the 100 butterfly. That performance bested Amanda Loots' standard of 58.42. This came on the heels of Retief wiping out Chanelle van Wyk's 50 fly record of 26.65 with a 26.56 in preliminary action earlier in the meet.

Meanwhile, Gerhard Zandberg clinched two more gold medals at the meet to raise his tally to six. With four titles already in his grasp, Zandberg captured the 50 free (21.47) and 100 IM (53.78). The 50 free also gave Zandberg a sprint sweep as he already won the 50-meter events in the back, fly and breast.

In other action, Cameron van den Burgh won the 100 breast in 1:00.11, while Ryk Neethling withdrew from the meet "due to a right shoulder injury," according to Swimming South Africa.
