Torres Rules at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, June 23. IN spite of a long delay due to a bizarre "practical joke," in which someone drove the trailer containing all the timing and related computer equipment into the pool, the swimming was sizzling on the second day of competition at the Cadillac Challenge Series swim meet at Santa Clara. And no one was hotter than 33-year-old comeback queen, Dara Torres.

Torres won both the 100 free and the 100 fly. Her 100 fly time, 59.12, was both a meet record and a lifetime best. In winning, she edged another senior citizen of the lane lines, Ashley Tappin, who stroked a very strong 59.83.

Torres breezed to a one-second win in the 100 free, touching in 55.23 to Tappin's 56.20. Catherine Fox was third in 56.97. Amy Van Dyken, who says she is fully recovered from two shoulder surgeries, won the B final in 56.79, third fastest time of the day.

Jamaica's Janelle Atrkinson added a victory in the 400 free to go with her win yesterday in the 800. Atkinson's 4:13.64 was almost three seconds ahead of the field. Australia's Elli Overton took the 200 breast in 2:34.95. Amy Balcerzak, who won consols, had the second fastest time at 2:35.56.

Tom Wilkens and Robert Margalis waged a titanic battle in the men's 400 IM with Wilkens out-touching his younger rival, 4:23.12 to 4:23.14. Margalis almost caught the national champion with his 57.98 final (freestyle) leg.

Kyle Salyards breezed to a win in the 100 braest in 1:04.27. japan's Daisuke Hosokawa won the 200 free in 1:51.89, edging Nate Boyle (1:52.10). Ohio high school star Jayme Cramer took the 200 fly in 2:01.72, out-reaching Japan's Sunsuke Koba 92:01.78). Thirty-eight year-old Dennis Baker swam 2:09.62 in prelims.
