USA Junior Nationals: Day Four Prelims Notes & Results

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, August 9. THE fourth day of preliminary swimming concluded at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI during the Speedo Junior National Championships.

Women's 100 backstroke
Elizabeth Beisel of Bluefish and Emily Bos of West Michigan went head-to-head the entire 100 meters with Beisel claiming the top seed, 1:03.82 to 1:03.84. CSP Tiderider Taylor Wohrley finished third in 1:04.05, while Atlantis Aquatics' Jessica Guro placed fourth in 1:04.14.

Men's 100 backstroke
Dallas Mustang Matt Thompson kept on a roll with another meet record, this time with a time of 56.60 in the men's 100 back. That effort eclipsed his previous best time of 57.18 set last year in Irvine.

Teammate Max Murphy took second in 57.51, while Swimming World Magazine's High School Swimmer of the Year Austin Staab, representing Westerville Aquatics, touched third in 57.55.

Women's 400 freestyle
Brophy East's Ashley Evans hit the wall in 4:15.00 to capture lane four as well as the meet record, previously set by Chelsea Nauta at 4:15.66 in 2005. Elizabeth Beisel remained busy, this time with a second-place time of 4:18.76, while Gulf Coast Swim's Chelsea Franklin (4:19.37) and Memphis Thunder's Lindsey Brackens (4:19.54) rounded out the top four.

Men's 400 freestyle
Mecklenburg Aquatics' Thomas Santoli paced qualifying with a time of 4:01.78, while Long Island Aquatics' Tommy O'Neill finished second in 4:02.25. Santoli's teammate Ryan Marklewitz tied O'Neill with a matching 4:02.25, while both held off Dallas Mustang Clint Hallum (4:02.28).

Women's 100 breaststroke
Southeastern Swim Club's Lindsay Rogers led a quintet of 1:11 times with a top-seeded effort of 1:11.35, while Dallas Mustang Spindrift Beck placed second in 1:11.43.

Sea Devil Swim's Ashley Danner (1:11.66), Sara Nicponski, swimming unattached, (1:11.75) and Curl-Burke's Ellyn Baumgardner (1:11.96) comprised the rest of the 1:11 times to set up a close race at night.

Men's 100 breaststroke
Marietta Marlin Dillon Connolly brought the meet record to sub-1:04 with a time of 1:03.67 to top qualifying. That performance surpassed the 1:04.12 set by Mission Viejo's John Criste in 2006.

Criste, however, placed second in 1:04.54, while Walnut Creek Aquabear Timmy Freeman took third in 1:04.81.

Women's 100 butterfly
Georgia Coastal Aquatics' Kelsey Winters clipped Hershey Aquatics' Kati Nolan, 1:01.32 to 1:01.49, to earn the top seed for finals.

Meanwhile, Alex Forrester finished third in 1:01.70, while West Florida Lightning's Katie Kastes touched fourth in 1:02.01.

Men's 100 butterfly
Arlington Alligator Sam Wilcher posted a meet-record time of 54.71 to wipe out the 54.96 set by Tyler McGill a year ago. Kansas City Blazer Bobby Bollier finished second in 54.88, while Westerville's Austin Staab placed third in 54.92.
