USA Junior Nationals: Ashley Evans Sets Meet Record in Women’s 800 Free, Charlie Rimkus Wins Men’s 800.

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, August 6. JUST two days after fans watched the senior-level swimmers light up the IU Natatorium at IUPUI during the USA Swimming National Championships, the Speedo Junior National Championships began with heats of the 800 freestyle.

Women's 800 freestyle
A few days after coming in second out of the slower heats in the women's 1500 free at the USA Swimming National Championships, Brophy East's Ashley Evans, 15, dropped a meet-record performance on the crowd to open junior nationals. Evans clocked a time of 8:37.77 to emerge from a tough heat that offered up the top four swimmers. The time eclipsed the previous standard of 8:43.27 set by Samantha Vanden Berge last year in Irvine.

Mission Viejo's Chloe Sutton, 15, a day after finishing second at the Indianapolis Open Water Grand Prix 10K race picked up second-place honors with a time of 8:40.04.

Meanwhile, Long Island Aquatics' Elizabeth Goldson took third in 8:44.89, while Mason Manta Ray Amanda Smith placed fourth in 8:47.99.

Men's 800 freestyle
Mission Viejo's Charlie Rimkus took all that FAST's Matt Waggoner could give him and still wound up on top in the men's 800 freestyle. Rimkus claimed the junior national title in 8:15.99, while Waggoner placed second in 8:16.24.

Rimkus led for the first 400 meters, before Waggoner took over from the 450-550 marks. Rimkus then regained the lead at the 600-meter turn and withstood the pressure of Waggoner on his shoulder.

Bulldog Aquatics' Matt Lee won a battle of his own with a third-place time of 8:19.49 over Long Island Aquatics' Tommy O'Neill's fourth-place effort of 8:19.59.
