USA Swimming Nationals: Michael Phelps Ties For Third All-Time in Men’s 100 Back to Open Medley Relay; Phelps On Slate for Japan International Grand Prix

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, August 4. WHILE we wait for the 400 medley relay heats to conclude, some news to report is that Michael Phelps came up just shy of Aaron Peirsol's 100 backstroke world record again.

Phelps went out hard with a split of 25.78, under record pace, but could not bring it home as fast as he did last night's 53.01 as he touched in 53.17 on his leadoff leg for Club Wolverine.

The time tied Peirsol's second-best time for third all time in the world. Another good try from Phelps.

The leadoff helped Club Wolverine to a time of 3:38.32 to break the meet-record time of 3:38.37 set by Circle C Swimming in 2002.

Additionally, we just learned that Phelps will be heading to Chiba, Japan as part of the official U.S. contingent competing at the Japan International Grand Prix in two weeks. However, he will be taking on a minimal schedule.
